Initially set up by Phil Weaver of epic-cycles.co.uk back in 2005 the Autumn Epic soon gained a reputation of one of the best sportives in the county. Twice voted top sportive by Cyclosport readers, it was also one of the first to have chip timing and online entry.
By August 2015 it had become clear that the Autumn Epic wasn't going to run that year. So a group of enthusiasts got together to do an "unofficial" Autumn Epic - with Facebook and online community support we got a small group together to take on the usual route on the usual day.
Plenty of media interest and articles in The Guardian, Cycling Weekly (twice) and Cycling Plus. It even gets a mention in William Fotheringham's "Cyclopedia" book.
Clubs have always identified it as a key event for them - 450 clubs have sent teams over the years (there's been over 3,500 participants) - some of the most enthusiastic are Wolverhampton Wheelers, Mid-Shropshire Wheelers, Ludlow CC and Hereford Wheelers plus sizeable contingents from London and a few from even further afield - Edinburgh, Italy, New York...
